Herds of wild elephants—around 300 in number—graze nearly 9000 hectares (22,240 acres) of Minneriya National Park, where life centers around Minneriya Lake. Once a year, during the dry season, all 300 elephants gather around the banks of the lake to graze in a marvelous natural event known as “the Gathering.” This also happens to be the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world.
