Arrive by Air |
Return by Road for the Complete Northern Pakistan Experience |
Our most popular combination: Fly from Islamabad to Skardu on arrival (55 minutes, spectacular Karakoram views), spend 5–7 days in Skardu, then return overland via the KKH driving along the Indus River past Nanga Parbat and through the ancient Silk Route. Two completely different experiences, one trip.
Flight cancellation note: Skardu Airport has the highest flight cancellation rate of any airport in Pakistan due to mountain cloud conditions. We always build a flexible return schedule into our air packages if your flight is cancelled, we arrange road return immediately at no extra cost.
5-Day Skardu Tour Itinerary – By Air from Islamabad/Lahore
PKR 85,000 per person (group of 4) airfare included
Day 1 — Fly to Skardu Depart Islamabad (or Lahore via Islamabad) on PIA morning flight. The 55-minute flight is itself an attraction as the aircraft climbs out of Islamabad, the Karakoram unfolds below. K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum all visible on a clear day. Arrive Skardu Airport. Met by our driver and transferred to hotel. Check in and rest. Afternoon: Skardu Bazaar and Kharpocho Fort viewpoint at sunset the ancient Balti fort perched above the Indus River junction, looking over the wide alluvial plain of Skardu city. Dinner at local restaurant try Balti beef stew, chapshuro (meat-filled flatbread), and Skardu apricot juice.
Day 2 — Shangrila Resort + Upper Kachura Lake + Satpara Lake Morning: Shangrila Resort (Lower Kachura Lake) — Pakistan’s most famous resort, set beside a deep turquoise lake surrounded by pine forests and rocky mountains. A Chinese aircraft fuselage repurposed as a restaurant floating on the lake is the iconic image of Skardu. The lake’s colour in morning light is extraordinary. Drive to Upper Kachura Lake — smaller, more remote, and in many ways more beautiful. Clear emerald water reflecting the surrounding peaks. Afternoon: Satpara Lake a wide, calm lake with a road running along its length. Satpara Village on the far shore is one of the oldest settlements in Baltistan. Evening return to Skardu.
Day 3 — Deosai National Park Full day excursion to Deosai the defining experience of any Skardu visit. Drive from Skardu via the Deosai road (dirt track rising steeply into the plateau). As you crest the final rise, the plateau opens before you: 3,000 square kilometres of high-altitude flatland at an average elevation of 4,114 metres the second highest plateau on earth. In summer, Deosai is covered with wildflowers yellows, purples, whites stretching to the horizon under enormous skies. Himalayan brown bears live here, as do Marco Polo sheep and snow leopards (rarely seen but present). The silence and scale of Deosai are unlike anything else in Pakistan. Packed lunch on the plateau. Return to Skardu via sunset.
Day 4 — Shigar Valley + Shigar Fort Drive to Shigar Valley — 30km from Skardu, a wide green valley lined with ancient poplar and willow trees. Shigar Fort: a 17th-century Balti royal palace and watchtower built into the rock face above Shigar village. The fort has been painstakingly restored by the Aga Khan Cultural Service and converted into the Serena Shigar Fort Hotel — even if you are not staying, a visit to the fort grounds is essential. The restoration is world-class. Shigar bazaar: buy Balti handicrafts, locally dried apricots, and hand-woven Gilgit-Baltistan textiles. Optional: Blind Lake in Shigar Valley — a hidden lake accessible by a short walk, with reflective turquoise water and a backdrop of bare rock faces.
Day 5 — Katpana Cold Desert + Fly Home Morning: Katpana Cold Desert (Sarfaranga Desert) sand dunes in the middle of mountain terrain at 2,226 metres elevation. Asia’s only high-altitude cold desert. The contrast of sand dunes against snowcapped peaks is startling and photogenic. Drive to Skardu Airport. Fly back to Islamabad (weather permitting). If flight is delayed or cancelled, overnight in Skardu at our expense and fly next morning or return by road if you prefer.

Day 1 — Islamabad to Chilas (KKH Route) Depart Islamabad early morning (6am) in private 4×4. Drive Hazara Expressway → Abbottabad → Mansehra → join the Karakoram Highway at Havelian. The KKH (National Highway N-35) is one of the greatest feats of road engineering in history — built through some of the world’s most extreme terrain. Drive along the Indus River gorge. Stop at Besham for lunch. Continue through Dasu, Sazin, and Komila — each bend of the Indus revealing a new canyon. Arrive Chilas at dusk. Hotel overnight.
Day 2 — Chilas to Skardu via Gilgit Morning drive past the Nanga Parbat viewpoint the Fairy Meadows approach and the 8,126m peak’s Rupal and Diamir faces visible from the highway. Continue through Gilgit town (brief stop for fuel and lunch). From Gilgit the road enters Baltistan the landscape changes dramatically from the deep gorges of the KKH to the wider, sunlit valleys of Baltistan. Arrive Skardu late afternoon. Check in to hotel. Evening: Indus River and sunset view from Kharpocho Fort.
Days 3–6 — Skardu Sightseeing Full sightseeing programme across 4 days: Shangrila + Upper Kachura + Satpara Lake (Day 3), Deosai National Park full day (Day 4), Shigar Valley + Shigar Fort (Day 5), Khaplu Valley + Khaplu Palace + Manthokha Waterfall (Day 6).
Day 7 — Return to Islamabad Early morning departure Skardu for the long but spectacular return drive. Option A: Return via KKH (same route). Option B: Return via Babusar Pass if season and conditions allow turning north from Chilas, climbing to Babusar Pass at 4,173m, descending through Naran and Kaghan Valley to Mansehra and Islamabad. The Babusar route is the more dramatic return and adds Naran Valley to your experience. Arrive Islamabad late evening.
Top Destinations in Skardu- Detailed Guide
Shangrila Resort (Lower Kachura Lake)
Shangrila Resort is Pakistan’s most iconic mountain resort — a complex of cottages built along the edge of Lower Kachura Lake, 35km from Skardu city. The lake is deep turquoise, fed by glacial melt, and surrounded by pine forests and rocky peaks. The resort’s most photographed feature is a Chinese aircraft fuselage converted into a floating restaurant on the lake. Built in the 1950s by former Pakistan Army chief Agha Hasan Abidi, Shangrila is both a natural and historical landmark. Visit in early morning for the best light and the calmest lake surface.
Distance from Skardu: 35km, approximately 45 minutes
Deosai National Park
Deosai is one of the most extraordinary natural environments in Pakistan and one of the most underrated in the world. At an average elevation of 4,114 metres the second highest plateau on earth Deosai is a vast high-altitude plain covering 3,000 square kilometres. In summer (June–September) the plateau erupts in wildflowers: thousands of species bloom across the tundra in a carpet of colour that stretches to the horizon under vast open skies.
Deosai is also one of the last habitats of the Himalayan brown bear in Pakistan. The national park was established specifically to protect this endangered population. Bears are occasionally sighted in the early morning and evening your guide knows the best observation areas. The name Deosai means “land of giants” in Shina and the scale of the landscape, the enormous sky, and the profound silence make it immediately clear why.
Season: June to September only road closed by snow from October to May Distance from Skardu: 30km to the park entrance
Shigar Valley and Shigar Fort
Shigar Valley is 30km northeast of Skardu a wide, green, historically rich valley that was an independent Balti kingdom until the Dogra conquest of the 19th century. The valley is lined with ancient willow and poplar trees planted along irrigation channels, and the mountains rise directly from the valley floor.
Shigar Fort (Fong Khar “Palace on the Rock” in Balti) was built in the 17th century by the Amacha dynasty. It perches dramatically on a rock face above Shigar village, and its restoration by the Aga Khan Cultural Service is one of the finest heritage conservation projects in Pakistan. The fort is now operated as a heritage hotel (Serena Shigar Fort) a 17-room property where staying is itself a historical experience.
Khaplu Valley and Khaplu Palace
Khaplu Valley, 100km from Skardu, is one of the most beautiful and least visited valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan. The valley sits at 2,600 metres, is wider and greener than Skardu, and is dominated by the Khaplu Palace — a stunning 19th-century wood-and-stone royal palace built in traditional Balti-Tibetan style. Like Shigar Fort, the Khaplu Palace has been restored and operates as a heritage hotel.
Khaplu is also the base for the Hushe Valley trek one of the most beautiful mountain treks in Baltistan, approaching Masherbrum (7,821m) and the Gondogoro La pass.
Manthokha Waterfall, 8km from Khaplu on the Shyok River road, cascades 50 metres through a narrow rock gorge surrounded by hanging gardens. It is one of the most photogenic natural sites in Baltistan.
Katpana Cold Desert (Sarfaranga Desert)
One of Skardu’s most unexpected attractions sand dunes rising at 2,226 metres above sea level against a backdrop of glaciated mountain peaks. The Katpana Desert is classified as a cold desert (average annual temperature below 10°C) and the contrast of desert dunes with snow-capped Karakoram peaks is visually arresting and unlike anywhere else on earth.
The desert is located 6km from Skardu city, easily combined with the Satpara Lake excursion.
Skardu Honeymoon Package 2026
Skardu is rapidly becoming one of Pakistan’s most sought-after honeymoon destinations and its appeal for couples is obvious. Remote, extraordinarily beautiful, deeply peaceful, and offering accommodation in heritage forts and lakeside resorts that no city in Pakistan can match.
Why Skardu for Pakistani Honeymoons

Shangrila lakeside cottages waking to the turquoise lake, breakfast on the cottage deck, and the absolute silence of the Karakoram morning. Nothing manufactured here the romance is entirely the landscape.
Deosai plateau at sunrise — driving into Deosai before dawn to watch the sun rise over the world’s second highest plateau, surrounded by wildflowers and complete silence. A moment couples consistently describe as the most powerful of their entire honeymoon.
Privacy — Skardu has none of the crowds of Naran or Murree. The valleys are vast, the roads uncongested, and the sense of having a mountain world to yourselves is genuinely achievable.

What Our Skardu Travellers Say
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Pak Tours organised our family of 6 trip to Skardu in July 2025. Seven days by road from Islamabad the KKH journey itself was an experience we will never forget. The Indus River gorge at sunset, Nanga Parbat rising above the clouds, Deosai in full summer bloom. Our guide Imtiaz was exceptional. He took us to a local Balti family’s home for tea that hospitality, that simplicity, that warmth. Skardu changes you. We are already planning to go back.”
Hasan Mirza & Family, Islamabad
7-Day By Road Package — July 2025
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Booked the honeymoon package 6 days with 2 nights at Shigar Fort Serena. The fort is indescribably beautiful. Stone walls, wooden ceilings, a window looking out at the mountains nothing I have experienced in any luxury hotel compares to sleeping inside a 17th-century Balti palace. Pak Tours handled every detail. The private vehicle and guide meant we had complete flexibility. When we wanted to stay at Deosai for sunset instead of leaving early, our guide simply stayed with us. Perfect service.”
Zoya & Omar Baig, Lahore
Honeymoon Package – Shigar Fort Serena — September 2025
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Five of us came from Karachi for our first trip to Skardu. The flight itself, watching K2 from the aircraft window, was worth the journey. Deosai brought all of us to silence nobody spoke for several minutes when the vast plateau opened up before us. I have travelled internationally, but there is something about Skardu that I have not found anywhere else on earth. The Pak Tours team was professional and responsive throughout.”

By air for short leaves (3–5 days) 55-minute flight from Islamabad, spectacular mountain views. By road for longer trips 14–16 hours via KKH along the Indus River, one of the world’s great road journeys. We recommend flying one way and driving the other to experience both.

Yes Skardu and Gilgit-Baltistan are among Pakistan’s safest regions. Very low crime, exceptionally hospitable Balti people, and well-developed tourist infrastructure. Female travellers visit regularly. Main safety considerations are weather and altitude.
