The Mangla Dam is a multipurpose dam located on the Jhelum River and the 7th largest dam in the world. The Mangla Dam was the first of the two dams constructed to reduce the shortcomings of, as well as strengthen the irrigation system of the country as part of the Indus Basin Project, the other being the Tarbela Dam on the River Indus. The dam was constructed between 1961 to 1967 across the Jhelum River and includes a reservoir, main embankment, intake embankment, main spillway, emergency spillway, intake structures, 5 tunnels and a power station. This dam is not only used as a water reservoir but also as for Hydro power generation. Mangla Lake is a beautiful lake with a total water storage capacity of 9.12 km².
Built in the 16th century by the Muslim rulers of Kashmir, Ramkot Fort is located on the confluence of the rivers Jhelum and Poonch. It is said that the fort was built over the site of an old Hindu Shiva temple, but looking at the present structure of the fort, no one can doubt it being a structure of the 16th century. The fort is accessible from Mangla Lake which is located about 20km away from Mangla city. Recent excavations at the site have led to the discovery of several relics dating back to the 5th and 9th centuries.
